But you're winning the future, right Barack?

The president has been laying low, what no speech a day. The nation is looking for a good hero, or heroine, or enough votes to get us through another debt-filled day, or week, month or year. Maybe a sandwich.

Millennials in Play

Since a lot of them aren't working. Michael Barone:
The most noteworthy movement among whites has been among voters under 30, the so-called Millennial generation. Millennials voted 66 to 32 percent for Barack Obama in 2008 and identified as Democrats rather than Republicans by a 60 to 32 percent margin.

But white Millennials have been moving away from the Democrats. The Democratic edge in party identification among white Millennials dropped from 7 points in 2008 to 3 points in 2009 to a 1-point Republican edge in 2010 and an 11-point Republican lead in 2011. [snip]
In the wake of the 2008 election, I argued that there was a tension between the way Millennials lived their lives -- creating their own iPod playlists, designing their own Facebook pages -- and the one-size-fits-all, industrial-era welfare-state policies of the Obama Democrats.
Going after the vote: A remix of the TEA party message.

More. WaPo via DC Examiner:
Obama’s failed record on the economy seems to have convinced Americans that spending cuts, not more spending, are the better way to create jobs. The Post does not report this in their write up of the poll, but for the first time since they have been asking the question, more Americans (47 percent) now say that large cuts in federal spending will do more to create jobs than to cut jobs (44 percent).
Reuters with the jobs news of the day, durable goods number dropped 2.1 % vs. expectations of up 0.3 %:
Durable goods orders are a leading indicator of manufacturing. Though orders tend to be volatile, last month's unexpected decline could add to fears of a slowdown in factory activity.
Manufacturing has been the bright spot in the economy, whose recovery has faltered since the start of the year.

Then accuses mild-mannered MSM reporters of parroting "Republican talking points" by asking where's the president's plan. TWS:
So when the minority party in the lower chamber of Congress puts out a 19-page budget framework, the Obama White House derides it as unserious. But when the president of United States refuses to detail his plan to deal with the nation’s most pressing problem, and to avoid what he says would a global economic collapse, generalities are not only permitted, but preferable.
Here's video of the exchange, where Carney accuses Todd of repeating a "Republican talking point" for pointing out that the president doesn't have a plan...

Previous post: The Wonders of Dear Leader's High Speed Rail

---thanks for the links, Pundit & Pundette.  Much more there.

The Wonders of Dear Leader's High Speed Rail

China's high-speed rail network opened to passengers only in 2007, but has grown at breakneck speed thanks to huge state funding and is already the largest in the world, with 8358 kilometres of track at the end of last year. [snip]

Emergency workers at the crash site were seen using heavy machinery to bury the wreckage, and Chinese authorities have been quoted as saying they did so to protect the country's technological secrets. [snip]

In February, Beijing sacked the then railways minister, Liu Zhijun, for allegedly taking more than 800 million yuan ($124 million) in kickbacks linked to contracts for high-speed rail expansion.
Well what do you know--cutting corners, kickbacks, and cover-ups. Then there's this from the unaccountable Big Gov: "Do Not Question" - Full Directive From China's Ministry Of Truth On High Speed Train Wreck Censorship

High speed rail is a bad idea for this country. Via Reason:
"At the urging of the Legislative Analyst’s Office, the rail authority asked the U.S. DOT for more flexibility about where and when to build the initial "operable" segment. The LAO went as far as recommending that "If the state can’t win a waiver from the federal government to loosen the rules and the timing for using high-speed rail grants, it should consider abandoning the project." Not only would the Central Valley segment, by itself, have insufficient ridership and revenues to stand on its own, the Legislative Analyst wrote, but "the assumption that construction of the Central Valley segment could move quickly because of a lack of public opposition has already proved to be unfounded." The LAO suggested several alternative segments that could be more financially viable and economically beneficial than the Central Valley segment. They included Los Angels-Anaheim, San Francisco-San Jose and San Jose-Merced.
"But in a remarkable exercise of inflexibility and delusion, the U.S. Department of Transportation turned a deaf ear to the request. "Once major construction is underway...the private sector will have compelling reasons to invest in further construction," the DOT letter stated in an assertion totally unsupported by any evidence."
What may be most intriguing from a political economy perspective is that high-speed rail is the quientessential progressive public policy project, but paradoxically, it exists solely because of a "vision" and funding provided by the central national government. One of the most important ideas underlying progressive politics is that of an efficient, expert driven, administratively powerful, and unified government, eschews political approaches to government programs in favor of evidence-based (or "scientific") public policy goals. Of course, if you recall from the 2008 election, President Obama is a self-described progressive politician and even called for "evidence-based" public policy on the campaign trail.
California's high-speed rail project fails virtually every test of progressive politics yet it remains a signature program of a self-styled progressive president...
It's not cost effective anywhere in America except perhaps the NY-beltway corridor, and will impede the passage of freight, which does make economic sense.

Yet this stupidity is on the president's do not cut list.

No wonder we the people sent real leaders to DC to stop this, one of many costly wrongs.

President Vanity and Naivete

George Will, Congress stand its ground:
Between 6 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Sunday, the nation began a constitutional course-correction. The current occupant’s vanity and naivete — a dangerous amalgam — are causing the modern presidency to buckle beneath the weight of its pretenses. And Congress is reasserting its responsibilities.
I thought the most impressive part of Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner's remarks Friday after The One's meltdown was this:
"I take the same oath of office as the president of the United States. I've got the same responsibilities as the president of the United States. And I think that's for both of us to do what's in the best interest of our country. And I can tell you that it's not in the best interest of our country to raise taxes during this difficult economy," he said.
The president is making yet another speech tonight.

We the people may listen...or we may not.

This man represents what can be called a "Cultural Christian". He is supportive of all of the cultural impacts and societal advancements that Christianity has benefited Western Civilization, but he does NOT have orthodox Christian beliefs such as the deity of Christ, the Trinity, etc., and he does not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the whole purpose of the set of doctrines called "Christianity". People among his ranks include Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, many of the Founding Fathers and many Enlightenment Philosophers in general. They like the impact Christianity has on society but, for them, it's just "not for me". Unfortunately, many conservatives fit this description. The atheist S. E. Cupp is a prime example. I love her, she's very right about most of her political views, but she's not a Christian. I think this is a warning for everyone to worship Christ, not Christianity.

“hip and cool” core cities lose double-digit % GenX

Joel Kotkin, Forbes:
These findings should inform the actions of those who run cities. Cities may still appeal to the “young and restless,” but they can’t hold millennials captive forever. Even relatively successful cities have turned into giant college towns and “post-graduate” havens — temporary way stations before people migrate somewhere else. This process redefines cities from enduring places to temporary resorts.
Rather than place all their bets on attracting 20-somethings cities must focus on why early middle-age couples are leaving. Some good candidates include weak job creation, poor schools, high taxes and suffocating regulatory environments. Addressing these issues won’t keep all young adults in urban settings, but it might improve the chances of keeping a larger number. [snip]
Yet in the end, the condo market turned out far less appealing than advertised, crashing virtually everywhere from Chicago and Las Vegas to Atlanta, Portland and Kansas City. This has left many investors with empty units, distress auctions or far less profitable rentals.
Millennials next--though their migration might look different. They may be jobless or underemployed, stuck with their parents, wherever their parents are stuck. But if they move, the trend is already established--south and west. The new cool.

Leftist defends Chicago's demagogic police chief. Our violent ways? Speak for yourself. Do you think you are doing any community any favors by making excuses for this blame someone/something else mentality? What do you think life is like for those who live with this lawlessness every day?

A few comments:
Bullseye99 at 12:36 PM July 21, 2011 The thugs and criminals who terrorize innocent and helpless victims DO NOT abide by gun laws.  The only people who are hurt by more gun regulation are the law abiding citizens of this state. Like it or not, the law abiding citizes of this state want to excersize their fundamental constitutional rights afforded by the 2nd Amendment without the liberals' draconian regulations.  49 other states allow their citizens to carry concealed firearms for their protection against the criminals.  Like it or not, Illinois will soon have concealed carry for the law abiding citizens because our state is now ground zero for total (nationwide) victory over the hysterical gun banners on this issue.  All national focus is now aimed at the deprivation of 2nd Amendment rights in Illinois.
Law enforcement organizations that support concealed carry include the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, the Chicago Police Sergeants Association and the Illinois Sheriffs' Association.  Apparently the Chicago Police Supt. missed the memo that concealed carry deters cime and lowers crime rates.
Forget the sociological mumbo jumbo and just let me legally carry my gun so I can defend myself against the maniac criminal who never has, and never will, respect any gun law.

It's a game to some.
The knockout game has claimed at least one life so far.  In St. Louis this year, 72-year old Hoang Nguyen was walking with his wife, Yen, when four "young people" attacked.  The attacker pushed the old man's face to the side to make a "clear target for his fist," recalled his wife.  Nguyen was punched so hard that he fell to the ground and struck his head.  Then the attacker turned on Nguyen's 59-year-old wife, punching her so hard that she suffered a broken eye socket.  She could only watch as her husband was then kicked repeatedly.  Hoang succumbed to his injuries later that day.
Hey, what about targeting Asians--where are your sympathies there, you deluded liberal victimologist par excellence. I'm sorry to not be very sympathetic but I am FED UP.
