Buy Danish for Democracy

The Walgreen's in Wilmette on Green Bay has Danish cookies prominently displayed up front. Look for the bright blue tins!

Apparently French (what a surprise) and Swiss companies (remember their supposed neutrality in WWII) are undercutting the Danes.

Calling it "disgraceful", Carrefour, the French retailer, and companies associated with the Swiss firm Nestle are trying to distance themselves from the Danes to obtain commercial advantage in the Arab world, according to the Danish prime minister.

Mr. Rasmussen also spoke bluntly on the cause of the crisis, according to today's Intl. Herald Tribune, "which the prime minister said was more about attempts by Iran and Syria to cause diversions in the Middle East than 12 cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad in a Danish newspaper."

And in response to criticism that "Denmark's policies requiring that immigrants accommodate Danish tradition were at fault", the Danish prime minister stated firmly:

Rasmussen said he believed that Islam was compatible with democracy but argued it was incumbent on Muslim immigrants in Denmark and in Europe in general to embrace the liberal values of their adopted countries. "Denmark is a liberal country. We do believe in individual liberty and freedom. People can live according to their own customs," he said. "However, I think we have to insist on respecting our core values, including freedom of expression, gender equality for women and men and a clear distinction between politics and religion."
