Hamas on the Hook

One of Egypt's diplomats was kidnapped in Gaza yesterday, now under new "leadership" by Hamas. Last week Egypt's intelligence chief publicly stated that Hamas needed to stop the violence and recognize Israel.

The Tribune editorializes today:
If Hamas leaders don't dramatically change their ways--renounce violence, recognize Israel--they're due for a freeze of funds from the U.S., the EU and other donors. That's $1 billion a year or so--a huge chunk of the Palestinian budget. Israel has said it will stop the transfer of tax receipts if Hamas controls the government. The Palestinian Authority was forced last week to delay paying January salaries of 137,000 government employees, many of them security forces. They were finally paid on Thursday.
Hamas is accountable now. If the kidnappers weren't their terrorists, then whose were they?

I wonder how bin Laden reacts to Hamas. It has to be a problem to have elected people, as an unpleasant as they are, steal bin Ladens limelight in the Arab world.

That's got to be hard for bin Laden to take... to have some else register a success... a success only achievable in land occupied by Isreal too and via elections supervized by the west.
