Exelon: No Cover Up

Exelon Nuclear, an Illinois firm, was recently in the news as the subject of some leaks of tritium, mentioned in this earlier post of mine, Clean Energy of the Future. Chicago coverage seemed overwrought. I cited a NY Times story at the time, (which is not known as a conservative publication), and which generally corroborates Exelon's statements here in the Tribune's Voice of the People:
First, let me be clear: Any implication that we would ever attempt to cover up a legitimate health risk for corporate gain is erroneous at best and irresponsible at worst. Our first and foremost concern is the health and safety of our neighbors, and we will do whatever is necessary to make good on this commitment.

Next, there is no health or safety hazard to our neighbors at Braidwood as a result of tritium leaks from the Braidwood Station--contrary to the inflammatory statements that have been made by subjects in the story about this issue. The only drinking water well in the vicinity of Braidwood with any detectable level of tritium continues to meet federal and state guidelines for safe drinking water. This has been confirmed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as well as the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
