Giuliani vs. McCain

Giuliani vs. McCain. Conservatives like Giuliani even though he's a social moderate, and most can't stand McCain even though he has a social conservative voting record. Ryan Sager, RCP blog here.

Why? I think because Giuliani has a sunny personality, like Ronald Reagan. He is tough but warm, and he connects with people. And on Sept. 11th he was the best.

McCain is abrasive and a kind of to hell with you guy. He impresses liberal journalists because he is a real war hero, and they like him because he sometimes colorfully disagrees with the president and his fellow Republicans. And actually I like him too, especially when he is pork-busting and defending our Iraq policy.

I have forgiven him his contempt of social conservatives in the Republican primary against Bush. I am not so forgiving of his campaign finance reform debacle.

So we'll see who wins out, but I would look forward to a debate between either one of them and Hillary or Gore, the humorless pair.

UPDATE: NY Times reports New School graduates heckle McCain's commencement speech. He just earned some more conservative respect.
