Women, who won the right to vote and run for office last year, went to separate polling stations from men. There are 28 female candidates among the 252 people running in the election, and women make 57 percent of voters.There is a trend here, fostered by US foreign policy, which can not be denied. Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, as well as the earlier Orange, Rose and other "revolutions" in the former Soviet Republics. Some have had mixed success, but the trend is unmistakable and continues.
Even fundamentalist Muslims who opposed giving them the right to vote have campaigned for their support in the weeks heading up to Thursday's election.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been in Pakistan and India, and encouraged more democracy in Pakistan, prompting angry and defensive comments by its foreign minister, but our views are out there, and consistent. And the Bush administration continues to champion the cause of women, with substantive results.
