No Free Lunch Here

This week's Wilmette Life, "Developers ask village to pitch in":
The prospective developers of Wilmette's planned five-story downtown tower say they'll go along with the village's 2004 standards for 15 percent affordable housing per new multifamily project.

But that doesn't mean they'll foot the whole bill themselves.

Wilmette Village Center developers say they'll sell two one-bedroom units for $200,000 instead of $272,000, and two two-bedroom units for $225,000 instead of $315,000.

If the village wants another five affordable units to get the percentage up to 15, the builders have a deal: buy the 5 from them for 92 percent of market price.

They said anything more would rob too much profit from the project, with its planned 61 condos atop 15,500 square feet of retail space.

About lunch. Want fries with that?
