“With his extremist methods and by creating international and regional disputes the Iranian President is trying to divert the attention of his people from the internal crisis. This was evident when Ahmadinejad accused Gulf states of standing with the international community and threatened to burn the entire Gulf region if people of the region dared to stand in the way of Tehran’s nuclear program.....And Tony Blankley, RCP, quoting Henry Kissinger, the architect of realpolitik, that we are not facing isolated incidents, but a "carefully conceived assault":
We don’t want Iran to become a victim of its own arrogance and meet the same fate of Japan, which was defeated in the World War II following the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
He went on to warn: "The debate sparked by the Iraq war over American rashness vs. European escapism is dwarfed by what the world now faces ... the common danger of a wider war merging into a war of civilizations against the backdrop of a nuclear-armed Middle East. ... We now know that we face the imperative of building a new world order or potential global catastrophe."There may be an internal crisis in Iran, but the disarray in the West needs to be overcome by a recognition of our common danger. The president of Iran, in his speech last night at the UN spoke of the apocalypse. Hugh Hewitt here. Read all of it.
UPDATE: Anne Bayefsky, NRO, RCP on Ahmadinejad's idea of justice:
He talked about justice, though the Iranian criminal “justice” system includes crucifixion, stoning, and cross-amputation of the right hand and left foot. He talked about the dangers of nuclear weapons, though he is hell-bent on their acquisition. And he talked about the evils of Zionism, though he doesn’t have a problem with self-determination for non-Jews.
