Put the Security in Homeland Security

Does the Sun Times take its talking points from the NY Times? Story yesterday in the Times, editorial in the Sun Times today.

The Sun Times is concerned about the Coast Guard using weapons while training, doing its job to protect our coast, including the inland coast of the Great Lakes. The Sun Times does concede this:
The Coast Guard began live-fire training in January in temporary safety zones, but now it wants to create 34 permanent zones that would be closed to all maritime traffic two or three times a year for a few hours at a time so 56 units could safely train. The zones are all more than five miles offshore and away from shipping lanes and environmentally sensitive areas.
I would emphasize 2 or 3 times a year for a few hours at a time.

Democrats and their allies in the MSM are always blathering on about how we need to devote more resources to Homeland Security. I guess it probably really means pouring money into corrupt union bosses' cushy headquarters, and playing a surrender tape on the answering machine.

Public notice is important, but even the NY Times article notes most issues have been resolved, even though they bury it at the end, and a story in the Wilmette Life, Sun Times News Group, from more than a month ago reveals local support from law enforcement .

There is the obvious concern about the water supply, and I won't get into a list, but our lakeshore is built up, with more than a few landmarks. We should be thankful the Coast Guard takes its job seriously.

UPDATE: The National Post, via Drudge:
Blackhawk helicopters and interceptor jets have begun patrolling Montana airspace along the U.S.-Canada border, and American officials say unmanned drones could be deployed as early as next year.

But the U.S. is playing down the new security measure, claiming it has little to do with Canadians but more to do with the threat of terrorists using Canada as a staging point for attacks in America.
