A former manager in Chicago's public school system was sentenced Wednesday to 20 months in prison for taking tens of thousands of dollars in bribes from a schools contractor. James Picardi pleaded guilty in December to pocketing the money in exchange for steering contracts to Tru-Link Fence and Products, owned by James Levin, a fundraiser for the national Democratic Party. For $5,000, Picardi made sure Levin received a school system fencing contract in 2000. Levin, also convicted in the case, gave Picardi 10 percent of the value of other jobs his company won, including $20,000 for another fence project. Levin is to be sentenced in May.Guess these guys have a firm belief in public financing for campaigns. I think they should pay us for the cost of their incarceration.
