A local report from Iraq, a former Wilmette native and Troop 5 Eagle Scout. Wilmette Life:
The summer's surge of troops into Iraq may worry many Americans, but a Wilmette native in charge of morale for 20,000 soldiers on Baghdad's west side says it's not that way there.
"Within the division, morale is very high," Lt. Col. Steven T. Fischer said Tuesday. "The soldiers for the most part believe in what they're doing. It's hard to keep morale up when it's 120 degrees and cool drinks are few and far between ... but they believe in service to their country."
Fischer, a 19-year Army officer, is human resources manager for the 3rd Infantry Division, handling personnel issues ranging from provision of entertainment to reporting of deaths and injuries to headquarters.
Previously billeted at division headquarters in Georgia, Fischer was deployed to Iraq March 18. He was in the area for Desert Storm, too, in 1991.
Fischer said the surge in Iraq is a key to the high morale he referenced.
"One of the biggest differences (the surge has brought) is a downward trend in both U.S. and civilian casualties," he said. "Coalition or Iraqi forces can go into these areas (of conflict) and have freedom of operation."
Oh, and the Tenth Dems hosted landslide loser peacenik George McGovern. Some perspective on Tenth Dem leader Ms. Gash in this post.
