Burning a U.S. flag to make a political statement is a rare but vile and ignorant act. The flag doesn't stand for any one party or current policy, but for our ideals and those who have given their lives defending them.
But one aspect of the U.S. flag that stirs my heart is that it represents the right of vile and ignorant protesters to destroy it. Any old insecure, repressive nation can outlaw insults to its cherished symbols, and many do. It takes a great nation to permit such insults.
True enough. So I look forward to other heart-stirring expressions of support for our ideals and those who have given their lives defending them.
