Maroon Baseball in Japan

The University of Chicago baseball team helped bring competitive baseball to Japan, taking steamers across the Pacific 5 times from 1905-1936. They lost the rematch to Waseda University, but were good sports about it. Tribune:
The Maroons — invited by Waseda in celebration of the school's 125th anniversary — said the losses did not dampen their spirits. Players said they were in awe of Waseda's pitchers, led by phenom Yuki Saito, who might one day play for a U.S. Major League team.

And they got a kick out of playing in front of 13,000 fans in Hiroshima, and thousands more in Osaka and Tokyo.
A cross-cultural spring break, and a unique start to the season.
