Carly on Point for McCain

Barack Obama got a post-nomination bounce among women (and men), but as Rasmussen notes, the polls are unusually fluid this year. (And a recent Pew poll showed a decline among white women and independents.) Former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina has stepped out on point for John McCain, in a bid to win women's votes and shore up his economic know-how:

McCain's overtures to women in the past have been limited -- his daughter Meghan McCain writes her own blog and his chief strategist's wife heads up a voluntary women's outreach group -- and now he is offering independent and Democratic women the unconventional pitch that his policy prescriptions for economic, health-care and environmental issues trump such traditional issues as equal pay, abortion rights and contraception coverage.

"No one should take a woman's vote for granted, and the Democratic Party should certainly not take it for granted," said Fiorina, who appeared on "Good Morning America" yesterday as part of her effort to reach female voters. "I'm a woman, and as a woman, I'm really proud Hillary Clinton ran for president. I am enormously proud of what she did, and frankly, I have enormous sympathy for what she went through."

Obama appeals to upscale voters, but given his high tax policies some in that group may eventually question their support. Hillary's more blue collar voters are a prime target for McCain.

The number one issue right now is the economy, and women are more sensitive to food and fuel prices. Health care is also a top issue, and McCain has a good plan. It's a winning strategy to go after the economizing mom, and Carly Fiorina, who started out as a part-time secretary, is an effective voice for that McCain message.

Women for McCain.
