But there also will be the increased costs the bill levies on employers. Those new costs, combined with their share of the higher insurance premiums, will mean smaller paychecks for those who have a job, and fewer jobs created for the millions of unemployed.

At a time when we are struggling with a 10 percent unemployment rate, Democrats are pushing a health care bill that will harm the small businesses we are counting on to create the jobs in the first place. The National Federation of Independent Business, the nation's leading small business association, recently concluded that in one way after another the Democrats' bill "fails small business."

There are approaches that can make our health care system better, cheaper and more efficient; and Republicans have offered a number of solutions that would provide needed relief.
