The absolute worst thing that humanity could do is mistake a short-term natural cooling for the absence of human-caused global warming and, in so doing, not transition as soon as economically possible from the fossil fuel age to the post-fossil fuel age.

To make this mistake would leave a legacy of global warming for our children, grandchildren and multiple generations thereafter which they likely could not reverse, and for which they would likely not forgive us.

Hi all. Any of you want to explain decadal natural variability and signal to noise and sampling errors to this new "IPCC Lead Author" from the BBC? As we enter an El Nino year and as soon, as the sunspots get over their temporary--presumed--vacation worth a few tenths of a Watt per meter squared reduced forcing, there will likely be another dramatic upward spike like 1992-2000. I heard someone--Mike Schlesinger maybe??--was willing to bet alot of money on it happening in next 5 years??

Hmm, a betting scientist?!!! Perish the thought. Lots of hyperbole before the email evidence of data tampering came out:

He figures about 85 percent of warming is being caused by humans, with the rest coming from natural causes and the sun.

He cites the small but growing presence of greenhouse gases, which make up less than 1 percent of the atmosphere but are responsible for holding much of the sun’s radiation.

“A little bit of these guys can have a fantastic effect,” he said.

Schlesinger said the world needs to make huge changes this century — from agriculture to basic energy needs — to avoid a global temperature rise of about 5 degrees Fahrenheit and ocean levels climbing by at least 2 feet.

He’s doubtful it will happen for a simple reason — people don’t want to make dramatic shifts in their lifestyles.

“We’re going to have to change everything this century, and that’s enormously difficult,” he said.
