Giannoulias Greeted by Protests Over Bright Start Losses

Illinois GOP:

Families call on Treasurer to Apologize

(CHICAGO) – Parents and children upset with steep losses in Illinois Bright Start college savings program let State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias know how they feel as they demonstrated outside a Chicago event where Giannoulias and Republican Congressman Mark Kirk were scheduled to make appearances.

“Alexi needs to apologize to Bright Start families,” one sign read. “How did you lose our college savings?” another one asked. Demonstrators marched outside the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Chicago.

“It’s ironic that a guy claiming such vast banking experience was able to mismanage the state’s college savings program so badly,” remarked Illinois Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady. “He failed the hard-working families of Illinois trying to save for their kids’ future.”

The Bright Start program lost an estimated $150 million through bad decisions and poor investments. Giannoulias at first claimed the losses were about $85 million.

Vice President Joe Biden is campaigning with Giannoulias in Chicago today. “It’s fitting that a candidate who can’t keep his story straight on anything would have Joe Biden campaign on his behalf,” said Brady. “We all know the vice president’s tendency to embellish and stretch the truth.”

According to the Weekly Standard today, "If Joe Biden is prudent, he'll respond with "no comment" if asked by reporters about Giannoulias' attacks on Mark Kirk. Prudence and self-control, however, are not the vice president's strong suits."
