Dear Fellow Member of Keep America Safe:
One week after the UN Security Council passed a new round of sanctions against Iran, Ayatollah Mohammad Taqi Mesbah Yazdi, Iranian President Ahmadinejad's spiritual adviser, said Iran must not deprive itself the right to produce "special weapons." President Ahmadinejad announced on Wednesday that Iran would not make "one iota of concessions" and would move forward on building additional atomic reactors.
During testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Gen. David Petraeus said, "It is important that July 2011 be seen for what it is: the date when a process begins, based on conditions, not the date when the U.S. heads for the exits." This is a significant departure from the language used by the White House to describe troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. In December, President Obama made it clear that the July 2011 deadline was "locked in" and "there is no flexibility."
In other national security news this week, Faisal Shahzad, the Times Square bomber, was indicted on ten terror-related charges. Also, new intelligence memos warned that Anwar al Awlaki's call to kill Americans could inspire attacks.
Next Tuesday, in New York, two members of the Keep America Safe team will be honored by the Center for Security Policy. Board Member Debra Burlingame and Executive Director Aaron Harison will receive the Freedom Flame Award for their work to keep the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, the 9/11 mastermind, out of New York City. Keep America Safe's Liz Cheney will deliver the keynote address at the event.
