Perennial GOP candidate Jim Oberweis, having just lost his latest bid for elective office, refused to offer unqualified support for primary winner Judy Baar Topinka at the party's Unity Breakfast yesterday.
Sun Times:
"I never said I didn't endorse. I never said I did," Oberweis told reporters. "Look, there are different levels of excitement. As I've said, I would strongly prefer to see Judy over Rod Blagojevich, but the level of excitement, the level of my commitment will depend on the level of her commitment to reform in politics in Illinois."
Oberweis wants Kjellander ousted from his GOP power postions. Here's Kass in the Tribune:
Conservative Jim Oberweis said he couldn't support Topinka until she stood up and called for the head of one of her patrons, Republican Party boss Big Bob Kjellander, who received millions in consulting fees through companies that did bond business with the Democratic Blagojevich administration.
This is the same Kjellander that Oberweis sucked up to when he was running for the U.S. Senate two years ago. Now he wants Kjellander's head on a pike.
Oberweis has good company there, include me in that group. Topinka's running mate, Joe Birkett, had this to say:
"If Jim Oberweis wants to have any future in politics at all -- any at all -- he should endorse Judy today," Birkett told reporters. "We're going to win this race with or without Jim Oberweis. If he wants any future in Illinois politics, he better get on board."
Hey Jim, don't decide today please. Preferably never, if that's what it takes not to hear from you ever again!
