Alvin Paden, who lives at 1122 Emerson St., was among the residents who spoke against the proposal, saying it was too tall and didn't fit in with the surrounding neighborhood, which includes Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church across the street."It's like putting an elephant in a Volkswagen," Paden said.
Associate commission member Dave Galloway, one of the founders of Design Evanston, an Evanston-based group of design professionals, noted the group's opposition to the building as proposed. "This building belongs in a much higher density urban setting," he said.
Several members lent encouragement. "We're approaching the land of reason," said Commissioner Doug Doetsch.
It goes to the City Council next for the final say.
