"We want to give you the joyous news of the martyrdom of the mujahed sheik Abu Musab al-Zarqawi," said the statement, signed by "Abu Abdel-Rahman al-Iraqi," identified as the deputy "emir" or leader of al-Qaida in Iraq.
Joyous news indeed.
President Bush. AP:
President Bush said Thursday that the death of al-Qaida leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is "a severe blow" to the al-Qaida terrorist network and a decisive victory in the U.S.-led war against terorrism."Now Zarqawi has met his end," Bush said in the White House Rose Garden. "And this violent man will never murder again."
The President praised our troops, Americans can be "justly proud".
Amen.
Update: Statement by General Casey, via RCP, NY Times, included this:“Tips and intelligence from Iraqi senior leaders from his network led forces to al-Zarqawi and some of his associates who were conducting a meeting approximately eight kilometers north of Baqubah when the air strike was launched.
I think it is no coincidence he was killed not long after the Iraqi government was elected and fully put into place.
