Open and Friendly in Wilmette

Story in Wilmette Life about 80 year old man cited for violating the village gun control ordinance:
Police say he voluntarily turned the two guns over to them after a couple of Wilmette 11-year-olds interrupted his quiet life Aug. 24. The two girls said they had rung his doorbell, just to see how he would react. One told her parents that he had burst from the door screaming, chasing them with what could have been a pistol.

A week later, the girls recanted their story, police say.

Lang said he never even heard the doorbell.

Immediately after the girls' initial claim, police visited Lang's house and asked if he had any handguns. They say he readily pulled out the drawer, revealing an old Star Arms revolver still in its original case, and a WW I-vintage Webley revolver in a stiff brown paper envelope. Both were unloaded.

Perhaps this incident could be better handled by Wilmette's Community Relations Commission, charged with promoting an open and friendly Wilmette, or the Wilmette Youth Commission.
