An Evanston alderman raised concerns Monday about city funds going to a nonprofit housing group, criticizing their move to fine tenants who call police because of crime-related problems at the group's building.
At the City Council's Planning and Development Committee session Monday, 3rd Ward Alderman Melissa A. Wynne said she is "not comfortable" voting to give money to Wilmette-based Housing Opportunity Development Corp. until she hears whether the group has lifted its policy. The organization develops and manages affordable homes for people with low to moderate incomes throughout the northern suburbs.
Wynne said the corporation "didn't like the fact that the Police Department (was) called so often" by tenants about problems in their building at 319 Dempster St., so the corporation imposed a $40 fine that, for tenants living on limited incomes, "is significant."
"I'm not comfortable at all giving money to HODC when they have that regulation in place," she said at the meeting. Such a practice, she said, "chills the whole role of the Police Department."
A little light reading on the suburb next door. HODC previously in the news on a proposed Wilmette development, posted in "Apres Moi, le Deluge".
