Hate Crime a Crime?

Great post by Tom Mannis, Rogers Park Bench on whether hate crimes are constitutional. I've thought for a while that this kind of legislation is wrong---we should punish the crime, not try to get into people's heads and punish them for what we think they think. And as Mannis points out, the standards vary widely. Do we really want thought police?
