May the Best Person Win

The number of women running for major elective office may decline in 2008. June Kronholtz, WSJ:
The mixed outlook for 2008 contrasts with the increasingly pivotal role of women voters, who outnumbered men voters by 8.8 million in 2004. Women's votes historically have trended Democratic, but the Republican Party aggressively targeted them with issues such as education in 2000 and homeland security in 2004.
A new open seat in Ohio today, as Deborah Pryce retires. For me national security, homeland security and border security are inextricably linked and remain the top concern. I like Giuliani's priorities and commitments.

What this probably means is a combination of gung-ho political women Boomers' retiring and a general disaffection with politics right now. After all, there are lots of opportunities for women these days and the initial push back in the 80's and 90's to redress imbalances in the workforce and then the political sphere has faded.

And it's a positive development that we may be moving beyond kneejerk gender identity politics and looking at who is the best person for the job.

P.S. I just wish Jan Tax Cheat Schakowsky (D-IL-9th) would retire. How about it Jan?
