ILGOP: Seals' comment "surprising and disappointing"
CHICAGO -- The Illinois Republican Party today released the following statement in response to Dan Seals' surprising and disappointing embrace of the group behind rampant voter registration fraud in Lake County:
"While the Lake County Clerk expresses grave concern over the integrity of voter registrations turned in by Citizen Action/Illinois, Dan Seals openly brags about the support his campaign has received from the group," said ILGOP Executive Director Jason Heffley. "Instead of condemning voter registration fraud and joining our effort to protect the integrity of this election, Dan Seals continues to stand by a group now accused of perpetrating one of the largest voter fraud efforts in Lake County history."
In an affidavit this week, Lake County Clerk Willard Helander said her office had already uncovered nearly 1,000 fraudulent voter registration applications submitted by an individual claiming to represent Citizen Action/Illinois and remained concerned about nearly 5,000 other new registrants sourced to the same group.
"Between mid-August and the close of registration on October 7, 2008, over 6,000 voter registration records were submitted to my office by Citizen Action/Illinois," Helander wrote. "The myriad problems exhibited by registrations such as these and the unprecedented volume of these registrations is of grave concern and is believed to be a serious threat to the integrity of the 2008 General Election."
Citizen Action/Illinois' former executive director is Robert Creamer, a convicted felon who went to jail for bank and tax fraud in connection with the group's activities.[1] In 2005, Creamer was fined by the Federal Election Commission for involvement in illegal voter activities.[2]
According to 10th District activist Lauren Beth Gash[3], Seals was recruited to run for Congress at a candidate training seminar conducted by Creamer in March 2005[4].
