Bemoaning Bad Manners

Two gentlemen in a Tribune column today lament the loss of good manners. They explore all manner of explanations and implore people to just be polite

All very admirable, but I would lay the loss of good manners to two seminal shifts. One is the man-hating feminist dictates of the 70's which ferociously demonized any man who would hold a door or give up his seat--male chauvinist pig was the label. Certainly there was a need for workplace respect and advancement for women but NOW and their ilk smashed everyday civility (and demeaned motherhood, fathers, and the creation of life itself) and it has never fully recovered.

The other shift was the dumbing down of our schools. Outcome-based education. (Union-enforced) Mediocrity at all costs. The war against boys. Undermining parents and children. Killing the bright spark of DC school choice is only the latest manifestation.

Yes, it comes down to culture. No political party has a monopoly on good manners. But conservatives value what is best from the past to serve as a guide to the future.

Yes, I would agree, let's have some respect for wisdom.

P.S. One note about learning about finance in junior high. That is a good idea. We are not talking about money--we are talking about the market--a realm which gives millions of individuals scope for their talents and choice for their families every day. Adam Smith figured this out years ago. And he had some ideas on education too.
