Fourteen votes are needed to override a Stroger veto, a four-fifths majority that’s politically difficult to achieve.
But, the mountain got easier to climb on Wednesday, when Mayor Daley threw his support behind the full repeal backed by his brother, County Board Finance Committee Chairman John Daley.
"The county sales tax … was very detrimental … The retailers will tell you that. This is very, very serious for them," Daley said.
The mayor said county commissioners "realized what an impact it had upon everyone in Cook County — a very negative impact … It was strictly something that, I think, they had to do."
Daley is standing on shaky ground when it comes to railing about tax increases.
Um, yeah. But we welcome the help nonetheless. And we would welcome more tax rollbacks at the city and state level as well. Tribune editorial here.
