Schakowsky on Ethics II

From Bob Novak's column today "Democrats aren't eager to explore ethics cases" (though I think "allegedly" has been put to rest, as Schakowsky's husband was convicted last August on tax violations and bank fraud):

House Republicans, wounded by lobbyist scandals, have called on the House Ethics Committee to investigate more than 10 Democratic members headed by Jan Schakowsky of Illinois and Nydia Velazquez of New York.

Schakowsky's husband, consumer advocate Robert Creamer, has been indicted in a check-kiting scheme. The congresswoman co-signed Creamer's allegedly fraudulent tax returns. Velazquez is accused of violating House ethics guidelines by using her congressional office to endorse Judge Margarita Lopez Torres as Brooklyn Surrogate Court judge.

Democrats on the Ethics Committee are no more eager to explore these cases than Republicans are to investigate their accused colleagues. The only House committee evenly divided by party, Ethics is currently immobilized.

Meanwhile, the congresswoman still has on her website a 2004 article from Roll Call, with a hilarious quote, given her clear ethics problems dating back to the 90's, as yet uninvestigated by Congress:

But Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, said Democrats cannot sit idly by while Republicans continue to break the rules and tramp on ethical standards, voicing her anger about alleged conflict of interest by Tauzin.

"It would be accurate to say many of us feel we've just had it," she said.

Come clean, Jan! The only thing for you to do in good conscience is to RESIGN.

If your husband manages to avoid jail in his sentencing this February, you can join him in some honest community service.

The only way to clean things up is by public pressure. Now would be a good time.

Yes, Jan is so issue oriented, we should focus on the issues. Lets see, Jan sponsored Yo-Yo safety legislation, and sponsored a study to wreck Loyola University. Hmm...Jan has expressed support for Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez.

Maybe Jan is better off if we focus on her and her husbands scandals rather than her reprehensible legislative record.

Unfortunately, Schakowsky has no Democratic opposition in the Primary Election. Whoever wins the Republican Primary would be hard-pressed to get more than 38-39% of the vote even if she were indicted.

If she stepped down, the Democratic committeemen of the congressional district would choose her successor. In other words, six or seven persons would choose the Congressman, while the rest of us would continue to be screwed.
