This weekend in Chicago, the Dems courted the
trial lawyers, who along with the
teachers' union form the regressive core of their party. How appropriate in the
judicial hellhole that is Cook County
. Tribune: Clinton, along with Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, each contended the Bush White House has failed to respect the rule of law in its efforts to combat terrorism and other areas.
In separate 20-minute remarks, the contenders sought to draw attention to their perceived strengths before an organization of some of the Democratic Party's most dependable and prolific campaign fundraisers. Each of the candidates received a standing ovation.
On the Republican side, Rudy Giuliani is making a new effort to win the support of social conservatives on judges, persuading well-respected Republicans in the legal arena to join his team.
Powerline. Having been a tough prosecutor himself, he has earned that respect. And as the former mayor of New York, Giuliani understands better than most that the war on terror can not be treated as merely a criminal matter. That was the approach that blindsided us on 9/11 and left 3,000 innocents dead.
AP:
The former New York mayor criticized Democrats, accusing them of weakness and naivete in dealing with terrorism. [snip]
Giuliani argued that Clinton treated the World Trade Center bombing as a criminal act instead of a terrorist attack, calling it “a big mistake” that emboldened other strikes on the Khobar Towers housing complex in Saudi Arabia, in Kenya and Tanzania and later on the USS Cole while docked in Yemen in 2000.
“The United States government, then President Clinton, did not respond,” Giuliani said. “(Osama) bin Laden declared war on us. We didn’t hear it.”
In hindsight, Giuliani said, maybe it’s all clearer now, “but now is now, and there is no reason to go back into denial, and that is essentially what the Democratic candidates for president want to do: they want to go back, to put the country in reverse to the 1990s.
“I’m not blaming anybody back then,” Giuliani said later in the day at a campaign stop at a Jewish temple in Rockville, Md. “What I am saying is, I do blame people after Sept. 11. Now you have to get it.”
Dems, they don't stand up for America, and they're out of touch, putting us all
at risk.
