Go Green's latest campaign aims to sell people on the idea of turning off their car engines as they wait in line outside of schools, parks, or even in the drive-up lane of local banks.I think I'll turn off my car engine on Wilmette Ave. waiting for the train gates to flip up. Or queuing up at New Trier.
If people want to do this on their own, fine (and they can deal with the irate people behind them in line), but we don't need an expansion of village commissions that burn up staff time and raise our taxes. (Quite a few fewer commissions would be ideal.) No more nannying please.
If anyone in this town doesn't know how to access the internet for tips on ways to conserve energy they are probably still reusing tin foil to cover their leftovers in the frig.
And the market is working, with higher prices encouraging conservation. (Gas hits $4 today at some Chicago pumps):
In a climate of rising energy prices, business owners are finding that going "green" often makes good financial sense, but they say more needs to be done to help businesses do the right thing for the environment.Remember, though, a lot of the gas price around here consists of taxes. Sorry, I don't think little old ladies, parents saving for their kids college and young families need to subsidize a business run to the recycling center with cardboard.
Hey, I'm a conservative. I'm a conservationist. Common sense though, please.
