Barack Obama
spoke of sacrifice on Sunday with former Clintonite George Stephanopoulos, reminding some of us of Carter and his malaise speech--this before The One even assumes office. Not imagery he should encourage I would think. Even at their recent
presidential power lunch, Carter stood a bit apart, his failed presidency still lingering in the minds of many voters-- remember the
misery index? It certainly turned me from a Democrat to a Republican, and the speech was a large part of that.
So as I flipped through the Sun Times I was not too surprised to see someone else recognize the similarity, but I was stunned by
this--it's not a parody, ending just so:
Government spending will not solve our problems. The everyday habits of people must change. Washington and the American people must learn to live within their means. That's why any stimulus plan must have a sacrifice plan as its companion. The American people need a new "malaise speech."
