Safety concerns partly fueled the decision, but the trip also "would not be aligned with our beliefs and values," said District 113 Assistant Superintendent Suzan Hebson. That explanation, though, smacks of political protest to parents upset by the decision. You have to wonder what this Assistant Superintendant (where's the Supt.?) thinks these girls would do in Arizona. Are they going to be breaking the law while traveling? Fouling the environment? Maybe even dribbling gatorade on their chins in public, who can tell.
It's possible they could be kidnapped. Perhaps that's what the Assistant Superintendent meant by safety issues. But won't you be superintending them, Ms. Hebson?
P.S. I've got another question. If unrepentant domestic terrorist and nail-bomb designer Bill Ayers wants to speak at your school will he be turned away on the basis of safety concerns?
More. Highland Park High School is OK with a trip to China. How interesting.
