Bill Ayers No Dream

There I was, sitting in Reagan National Monday morning, sipping a Starbucks by the United counter before going through security. I had a little time, so I was browsing through the news. Some military guys had borrowed a chair from my table. I looked up from time to time to enjoy the sun streaming through. That's when I saw Bill Ayers, an instant blight. Scruffy, thinning beard, dippy earring, and the wirerims, heading to order. I gathered my things, got my camera ready, and snapped a shot right when he got his coffee.

I asked--what are you doing in D.C. Mr. Ayers?

For a moment I thought he might be on my flight back to Chicago. Charming. Initially I guess he thought I was laying claim to his coffee or something. He gave me an uneasy cheesy smile when he realized I was taking his picture. I asked him if he was speaking at GW? (Only I said GFW, guess I had the VFW on my mind) He said oh you mean GW, he said no...was trying to decide if I was a fan, then said he was giving a lecture in Arlington to a Renaissance group on education--that's what I do, education--you shouldn't believe everything you hear about me, you know nothing about me. I said, I know plenty--I'm from Chicago, a conservative blogger, and I'll post this. (Oh, yeah, Bill Ayers, quite the Renaissance man, nail-bomber extraordinaire. Gee, I see another friend of Barack, U.S. Sec. of Education Arne Duncan was there too. "The conference theme is “A Time for Reflection, Celebration and Rebirth.” How touching. At best, useless, at worst, so wrong.)

Then, unprompted he said--I wrote Dreams From My Father. I said, oh, so you admit it. He said--Michelle asked me to. I looked at him. He seemed eager. He's about my height, short. He went on to say--and if you can prove it, we can split the royalties. So I said, stop pulling my leg. Horrible thought. But he came again--I really wrote it, the wording was similar. I said I believe you probably heavily edited it. He said--I wrote it. I said--why would I believe you, you're a liar.

He had no answer to that. Just looked at me. Then he turned and walked off, and said again his bit about my proving it and splitting the proceeds.

But the question remains--is Barack Obama a fraud? Is his myth-making creation and only major accomplishment a product of Bill Ayers' imagination? (or his own) Is our President Barack Obama's biography written by an unrepentant domestic terrorist?

Perhaps I'll become Bill Ayers' favorite conservative blogger and he can prove his authorship himself--turn over your notes Bill. And how about turning yourself in for your crimes.

I remember that era, Mr. Ayers. People died because of your actions, including your girlfriend. More would have if you had been more successful. And yet you have the gall to teach the teachers of our young. I won't forget your murderous intent, your shameful acts, your contemptible lies and evasions. And when history is written, I hope you'll be reviled--or forgotten.

As for our President, the verdict is still out. But Barack Obama called Bill Ayers friend and colleague for years. That in itself makes a damning statement.

UPDATE: Jack Cashill, who first fleshed out the theory that Ayers ghostwrote Obama's book, on the new unofficial bio of Barack and Michelle, at the end of September:
In his new book, "Barack and Michelle: Portrait of an American Marriage," Best-selling celebrity journalist, Christopher Andersen, has blown a huge hole in the Obama genius myth without intending to do so.

Relying on inside sources, quite possibly Michelle Obama herself, Andersen describes how Dreams came to be published -- just as I had envisioned it in my articles on the authorship of Dreams. With the deadline pressing, Michelle recommended that Barack seek advice from "his friend and Hyde Park neighbor Bill Ayers."

UPDATE: Comments enabled. Getting some email from conservatives, and one frustrated liberal:
Just admitted it. Unprompted. Just like that. Said he completely authored the entire Obama bio.
Almost as if he knew exactly what your most burning question for him would be.

What a load of horseshit. It even reads like fiction. But that's really all it takes to convince wingnuts. A lil innuendo.

Given all the circular links to reference other posts within your own blog, it seems you have a particularly unhealthy obsession.

It's a smart move on your part to not accept comments and feedback. Conservatives never cease to amaze me in the depths they will stoop to deceive.

I'm so glad your movement is fractured beyond near term repair. Enjoy your misery in the wilderness.

My response:
I enabled comments. Forgot to do it when I updated my format.

It wasn't my burning question at all. But it was obviously his.

I would have liked to ask, did you still feel you didn't bomb enough. But we were near security. In an airport. In D.C.
UPDATE: Just so readers know, I have been tracking Ayers for some time. I have an MBA from the University of Chicago. I've lived in the Chicago area for 30 years, so I know the Hyde Park and Chicago radical leftie milieu. More: OK, people want more corroboration. He was not on my flight out, he had just come in for the conference, which I checked online to establish that he was really going there and be sure I had the venue right. I was heading out:Your itinerary Mon, Oct 5, 2009 – Washington National (DCA) to O'Hare International (ORD)
Flight United 0611
Departs Washington National (DCA)10:25 AM
Arrives O'Hare International (ORD) 11:28 AM

The United flight just prior had a fuel leak so they moved people from that flight on to ours. Here's a pix of my baggage claim chit--apparently I tossed my boarding stubs. Also, of course I realized he would want plausible deniability. Think what you want. Once he heard I was a conservative blogger he decided to tell me this. Three times. Even though I was skeptical.

P.S.Yeah, Obama's narcissism may have finally gotten to Ayers--keeping Ayers from laying claim to the best book he ever wrote. And Obama's indecision on some matters dear to leftists. Maybe he thought it was safe since SNL started snarking on Obama.

But if no one believes him now that would be funny too--because he's cried wolf all these years and has no credibility left. Now that he's ratting out Obama it could be all bets are off. What a connected world! There are no more secrets, no hidden spots in the bushes anymore.

A village has too many houses, too many rooms, this is not village, it is a world more like a bunkhouse dormitory.

In such a world, what comes to be the foundation -- Dreams or Truth?

Ayers once spoke for Dreams. At the airport, when you came to him -- was that Truth to which he aligned?

Thank you Bill! I still appreciate your early work on that creep--finding the record of his contribution to Barack Obama's state Senate campaign and giving lots of background and perspective on the Chicago radical community.

Thank you, Anne. That's precisely the question everyone should be asking him directly. You're the first.

Do you think Ayers is prepared to do more talking? He must be disappointed that Obama's continuing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Every other leftist, radical academic is being made into czar. Old Bill did more than anyone to make Obama and he's being left out. What's your sense?

GREAT job Anne! I'm immpressed, this is a heck of a revelation that many have suspected.

I've been at that Starbucks counter in Reagan National many times. The photo is either genuine or an excellent photoshop job. But
where can one find a stock pic with that expression on Ayers' face? I think the photo is genuine.

The photo doesn't prove the story of course, but it adds to plausibility. Why not post the date/time/flight number so at least that much can be verified? Post your boarding pass too. Was Ayers on the same flight?

Here's my take on why Ayers might do such a thing.

Steve: Yes, I think Ayers has sour grapes that Obama has distanced himself from him, and yes, that he hasn't gotten a job as a czar--even if it wouldn't have lasted long. Most importantly, I think it rankles with him that he doesn't get credit for the best book he's ever written.

Yes, I wouldn't be surprised if he writes a tell-all book at some point--since he remains a radical anti-war, anti-American. Maybe Obama is placating him for now with his pro-Chavez, Zelaya stance on Honduras. And this is how he can get credit in a backdoor way.

Anne,
What an impressive story. I have my doubts I would be able to keep my composure as you did. Having read your blog(s) for some time now, I believe you to be very credible. No need to post any baggage as far as I am concerned.

I think the most fascinating part is that he repeated this and your impression from the encounter he has sour grapes towards Obama. I think it is quite plausible he would want credit for the book, what author wouldn't?

Can you elaborate on his tone of voice as he repeated the claim he was the author? Was it consistent? I am curious about his tone and demeanor, just to fill in the picture. Excellent post - congrats

Anne said...

MarySue-- On Ayers' tone, he spoke in a firm, declarative way. He wasn't mad, he didn't sneer. He just kept stating it. I thought he seemed eager to have me post it.

He didn't move away. He clearly wanted to engage.

I believe that Ayers said it. I also believe that he will purposely dance on the head of a pin if he is questioned in a public forum about this, without denying it. Bear in mind that Ayers thinks that he is so much smarter than everyone. He thinks that he has the power to toy with anyone, especially a conservative blogger.

I have made this suggestion previously: Buy the book - Dreams, then file a class action lawsuit on your and every other purchaser's behalf that the book was fraudulently advertised as being written by Obama when, in fact, it was not. (You wanted a book by Obama, not something by Ayers) An attorney who claimed he was involved in the Milli Vanilli debacle said that claim would appear to have merit. The discovery process would be a Blast! (no pun intended)

Lame Cherry said...

Congratulations on meeting the mind which Mr. Obama's was formed upon.

You should be honored that Mr. Ayers decided to come out and play among the little folks as an intelligence operative he must have deemed you interesting.
Mr. Ayers is desiring attention. His breaching the subject means he is following Jack Cashill's work and is the likely source for the recent Andersen work which confirmed the forensic work of Mr. Cashill.

Note that Bill Ayers couched this entire situation not on credibility, but on attention and finance. He views the world as a stage for monetary reward. Exactly the process when he was the control for the terrorists. That is all telling and more than Mr. Ayers desired to reveal about the base of his personality.

Perhaps you could send him a contract to sign in his awarding you half royalties and legal standing if you do indeed prove he wrote Dreams.
Asking him to sign a legal document attesting to his confession, certainly would get his attention to see if he smiled and thought this was a game or not.

What a wonderful adventure eh.

My compliments

I always suspected Bill's malignant narcissism would rule in the end. He can't help it.

Your plane ticket proves nothing other than the fact that you saw him. But many on your side will take it to mean that he wrote the book.

It seems obvious to me that Ayers, like many others, thinks the crazy "Ayers wrote the memoir" claim is so outrageous that his statement is entirely deadpan sarcasm.

People forget that it took Ted Sorensen 52 years until May of 2008to finally admit in his memoirs that he was the real author of "Profiles in Courage" in 1956 and not John F. Kennedy. JFK took all the credit and accepted the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction in 1957 for a book he did not write and he secretly shared royalties with Sorensen to keep the secret.
There are many reasons why Bill Ayers might want his authorship known now including revenge. But this story and others by Jack Cashill might finally stir up some reporters in main stream media to at least intervew Obama's former unhappy book agent who felt she was cut out after all her hard promotion work when the big pay day came for Dreams in 2007-2008. The most interesting part of the Jack Cashill stories to me is that he had hired some scholars to compare the language in passages of Dreams to other books written by Bill Ayers. One example would be the nautical terms and metaphors in Dreams that were never part of the life of Barack Obama but were part of the personal history of Bill Ayers from asmall part of his life spent in the Merchant Marine. The last common sense question for Obama as an author is how come he never published anything--not so much as a single op/ed or a single letter to the editor in public print and then comes forth one year with a full blown best seller? It makes one wonder when so many other writers can offer many examples of their published writing before a first book effort. We know from public sources that Obama had to return and advance from a publisher for a prior book writing effort that flopped. The only published srap with his byline was a poem from his freshman year at Occidental College. One other was a pro-choice article in the Harvard Law Review attributed to him as editor but without his byline. So he had zero history of published writing and suddenly writes a book? Does that make common sense?

I remember Ayers from the 60's---he came to my town to form a cell of the Weathermen (yes, they had a politically incorrect name, now it's just "weather"!)Underground.

It irked this guy to have to be "underground" because he was a frustrated "star". He wanted to be like Jerry Rubin and Abby Hoffman, but he couldn't because he was facing prison time.

What a load of horseshit. Remind me to never value an MBA from UC again if this is the "critical" thinkers they churn out.

So enraptured in your hate you press on with your losing battle no matter the damage to the conservative movement. Keep clinging to the lifeboat full of losers as you all sink to the depths.

Socialism Now! Obama will lead us all out of the wilderness of greedy capitalism to the promised land of socialism. Or is it communism? Or fascism? Or Nazism? You guys get me so confused with your political ignorance.

(bet that will rile up you pinheads. it's so easy, it's almost not even fun.)

The fact that conservatives continue to gnash their teeth over ridiculous conspiracy theories like Bill Ayers is a testament to why conservatism is dying in America. We have serious problems and you guys continue to focus on this garbage. It's pathetic.

It's something of a win-win for Ayers, he's belled the cat. In football it's like a double-reverse. In rhetoric it's not sarcasm, it's post modernist irony, really
He can pull a Chomsky and say he never said it, or that he didn't mean it - even if he did, AND he finally gets to enjoy the catharsis of taking credit, besides pulling the cat's whiskers. All the evidence is laid out.
It's straight out of the Left's double-secret derring-do Derrida post-modernist playbook where a "Yes" can be a "No."
On Obama's side he can throw him under the bus, again - but the bell is an annoyance - and obviously his ego is threatened either by exposure, or his narcissism is threatened by the very existence of a ghost-writer.

Meanwhile, anonymous trolls rage in lickspittle sputterings, and express their urge to kill. Is that what they call "reasoned discourse?" No wonder Liberals enjoy record low-polling.

See what I mean? Never ceases to amaze me how some people can derive feelings of superiority by insulting others.

It's the LGF scene, though.

Good luck, Anne. Take some solace in the knowledge that the nasty comments are being left by people who do nothing at all to feel superior about.

There's a lot of room for scepticism and it would be nice if this conversation had been recorded so one could judge the tone of Ayers' voice.

But -- and I say this as a Democrat -- it's not to be dismissed altogether. I can see why Ayers might feel, at this point when much of the left is becoming increasingly critical of Obama, sufficently ticked off at his marginalization by Obama and his whole team if, in fact, he had been unusually helpful to the man.

If feeling grumpy in that way, you might have been able to catch an unguarded moment when the guy vented a bit.

The "Michelle asked me to" part of his comments has an esepcially truthful ring to it.

But all in all, does it matter much if Ayers helped him write? There realtionship is well known and documented, but it didn;t affect the election one bit.

Bill Baar said...

...does it matter much if Ayers helped him write?

It does in the context of ramping up in Afghanistan.

Ayers carries a lot of 60's anti-war symbolism. Having Ayers trot back on to the stage this way is no good for Obama.

I made you. Now you turn on me and make a colossal mistake. You bring back the Imperial America I [Bill Ayers] fought my whole life.

Yeah, the guy is going to be sarcastic. He's pulling Obama's chain; not righty-bloggers.

You're saying that Ayers' girlfriend died here, but she's still alive.

Backyard Conservative, this blog is loaded with grammatical mishaps like this one. They work to undermine your credibility and your intelligence.

Sorry.

Bill Baar said...

I believe the "girl friend" reference is to Ayer's friend Diana Oughten who perished in the Greenwich village townhouse explosion, and was indeed just a girl at age 28.

cheetosfan1981 said...

I remember hearing that Ayers actually wrote one of Obama's books, and thinking "why would someone believe that?" But that was because there was no evidence, just speculation. Things are different now, as you have not only a photo of Ayers himself but also your own baggage claim stub, which I think is the real smoking gun here. Pictures can be photoshopped (I spent some time analyzing the kerning on the Starbuck's sign and it checks out as far as I'm concerned), and even the EXIF data might be manipulable, but all that is unimportant -- you have a baggage claim stub.

Perhaps now this information can be used to impeach Obama or something.

The really great thing about this post is that no one, BUT NO ONE, can say that somebody wrote former Governor Sarah Palin's book for her.

Sarah sat down with her pen and a giant stack of yellow legal pads and cranked out one hell of a bestseller -- in about four weeks.

Even if she did have a ghostwriter, it was the Holy Ghost that helped -- and whoever has a problem with that can take it up with Jesus Himself.

Anne, you allow anonymous comments at your own peril. At least 90% of these anonymouse leftards haven't the ballz to leave their ID.

I recommend that you turn on the Blogger option that will have a requirement for an Open ID log-in of some sort. If this blog is on a 'classic' template, you might have to upgrade to the newer one. No biggie; I did it just a couple months ago. Painless, mostly.

Hang in there. This flood of anonymous anklebiting moonbats is here because they are a collective of hateful douchenozzles whose mother's hated them from the minute they were born. Most should've been aborted; who'd have missed them?

What the hell is wrong with your grammar? You're a damned adult and yet you can't manage to form a coherent sentence. I keep on having to go back and read your drivel again, which nearly doubles the amount of wingnuttery that I have to take in.

But then again, nearly all conservatives can barely communicate through written language, instead preferring short grunts and snorts, so I suppose this isn't new.

Anyway, congrats on your creepy stalking you fat piece of white trash. Have a nice day~

James Simpson @American Thinker writes that Ayers pulled this same stunt with Will Englund on October 3.

But Ayers is now floundering, possibly losing his job, losing his ill-gotten status and may...dare I say it..."burst", "blow", "asplode".

Wouldn't hurt my feelings if he did.

Matt said...

I think you're a tad bit obsessed over this. Similar to the Left's obsession with Bush doing cocaine and the Right's obsession with Clinton killing people. At a certain point you have to understand the average American doesn't really care. And even if you did herculean leg work it will go into a black hole because how can one prove such a thing?

I think Ayers is playing with you and loving it. And you're playing right into his game. Don't be gullible. Go after Obama for legitimate political issues.

Anonymous said...

My goodness,
Is there a single Obama supporter out there who can respond with intelligence?

Why are you all so angry? Because he's not popular? So what, stand by him, but don't make yourselves look vulgar and dumb while doing it.

Anne said...

Of course Ayers is loving this. No I am not obsessed. What would you have done, given the opportunity to cover this notorious figure?

But unlike those other examples you cite, there is much more evidence on Ayers' crimes. He skates around it in his book Fugitive Days. But perhaps there will come a time when he is too clever and trips himself up. There is no statute of limitations on murder.

Anne said...

As far as this story goes, it goes to the core of Barack Obama's legitimacy as an inspirational figure.

Ayers busts the Obama myth. He made him, he can bring him down.

Thanks Anne.

I am an independent [non-affiliated centrist] that had been struggling with the possible ramifications of the wing-nutty, apoplexy spewing from the Right since a black democrat was elected president ... having young kids, I was worried about their future with all this talk of secession and armed revolt [and the recent screed regarding the US military having some moral obligation to stage a coup].

Posts like this, and many others, have begun to make me less chagrined at the way things are going ... the more I have parsed the lunacy out against what I think us in the center hold dear, the more I am comfortable with the probability that the Right in this country is actually imploding; that the center is aghast at what is happening on the Right; and, that there may be an opening for a 3rd, more centrist, party to rise up and actually compete with the incompetent Dems ... keep up the good fight Anne ... the more the fringe on either side moves away from the center the better off we will all be in the end.

Anne said...

Well, I am center right, as is the country, and we are rising up. Peacefully. At the ballot box.

These unguarded moments are as close as we get to actual truth in this political universe of spin, controlled messages and astroturf (ie, Alexrod Media group).

And I say that not as a conservative (which I proudly am) but as an American. If Karl Rove told some random person in an airport that he thought Bush knew about WMDs but didn't care, this would be just as valuable as evidence. (of course, if you understand the intelligence community at all you'd know that Bush knew as much as they did which wasn't nearly enough).

"A Closer Look at Obama's Odyssey" where the author, Jack Cashill teases out the Odyssean themes in "Dreams of My Father" and links them to Ayer's own fascination with the Odyssey, contributing more to the argument that Ayer's, indeed, did write the book.
Good work, by the way! Love that citizen journalism!

This is really funny- you guys really believe this stuff! Because two men are fascinated with what is possibly the "Ur work of literature" in western civilization means that one wrote the other's book! Amazing! Next- all people fascinated with the Odessey are card carrying communists, terrorists, etc...

Looking forward to the next superstretch of "logic"

Anne said...

The stretch is ignoring all of this without questioning it.

Armadillo said...

Anne- a computer analysis such as that done by Donald Foster on Joe Klein's PRIMARY COLORS would be evidence. Such an analysis is described on Page 57 of this book, Applications of computer content analysis By Mark D. West. It is is excerpted in google books, here:

http://books.google.com/books?id=DbEIH6wLyAcC&pg=PA57&lpg=PA57&dq=%22primary+colors%22+klein+analysis&source=bl&ots=2rMbr8Ulgs&sig=HqEVSzlZl11AdLHjx26fWIymjCE&hl=en&ei=yK3cSq-fF83PlAeig_GhAQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CB4Q6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=%22primary%20colors%22%20klein%20analysis&f=false

I am sure that if such an analysis showed that Ayers wrote the President's book that it would be all over the media (or, to use a right wing mindset, at the very least, all over Fox News). Chances are, some conservative paid for an analysis, didn't find anything, and that's why there is nothing to read about. Except, of course, comparisons with the Odessey. Which you are welcome to believe. You are also welcome to believe in the tooth fairy. This is still a free country.

Anne, switch on Blogger's editing comments option. Keep the liberal perspective if they can keep the personal insults and their filthy fingers to themselves. They really hate it when liberals get censored.
